Retirement Blind Spots

Medicare is only one part of the retirement picture.

A Medicare review can uncover planning questions that sit just outside Medicare: long-term care costs, retirement-income timing, IRMAA surcharges, and whether an old policy still fits the next chapter.

Care Costs

Long-Term Care

Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing custodial care, assisted living, or memory care. It is worth asking how care would be paid for before a family is in crisis.

Income Timing

Retirement Income & IRMAA

IRA withdrawals, pensions, capital gains, and other income can affect Medicare Part B and Part D costs through IRMAA. A plan should account for the Medicare side of retirement income.

Policy Review

Life Insurance & Legacy Planning

Some life insurance policies include long-term care benefits, while others may no longer fit. Jon can identify the Medicare-related questions and coordinate with JK Financial when a specialist review makes sense.

Common Questions

Medicare questions,
plain-English answers

When should I sign up for Medicare if I'm turning 65?

You have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period — 3 months before your 65th birthday month, the month of your birthday, and 3 months after. Missing this window triggers a 10% permanent late enrollment penalty on your Part B premium for every 12-month period you were eligible but didn't enroll.

What's the difference between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare and pays most of your out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that often includes vision, dental, and drug coverage. The right choice depends on your health, your doctors, and your budget — that's exactly what we review together.

How much does it cost to work with you?

Nothing. My service is 100% free to you. Insurance carriers pay advisors a commission directly — you pay the exact same premium whether you enroll through me or on your own. There's no reason not to have an expert in your corner.

I still have employer coverage. Do I need to enroll in Medicare at 65?

It depends on the size of your employer. If your employer has fewer than 20 employees, Medicare becomes your primary coverage at 65 and you should enroll. If it's 20 or more employees, you may be able to delay without penalty. This is one of the most common — and costly — areas of confusion. Let's talk through your specific situation.

Do you serve areas outside Kansas City?

Yes. I'm based in Blue Springs, MO and serve the entire Kansas City metro area including Independence, Lee's Summit, Overland Park, and surrounding communities. I also serve clients throughout Missouri by phone or video call.
